An estimated 65% of the world’s diamonds come from Africa. According to the U.N., 140,000 carats of conflict diamonds were smuggled from the Central African Republic alone, worth $24 million. What Are Conflict-Free Diamonds?
Conflict-free diamonds are sourced through careful tracking from mine to market to help prevent the sale of conflict gems. This effort follows the Kimberley Process (KP) — an international certification system designed to stop the trade of diamonds linked to violence.
Under the KP, participating countries must certify that their exported diamonds are conflict-free, based on how and where they are mined and traded. However, guaranteeing that every natural diamond at retail is 100% conflict-free remains a significant challenge.

Do 100% Conflict-Free Mined Diamonds Exist?
While many mining companies claim their diamonds are conflict-free, verifying these claims remains difficult. Diamonds often travel across multiple countries for cutting, polishing, and grading, which can obscure their true origin and make it nearly impossible to guarantee they are 100% conflict-free.
As The New York Times noted, the Kimberley Process was launched in 2003 to reassure consumers. Although it has reduced the number of conflict diamonds in circulation, it still has loopholes, allowing diamonds from war zones or unethical conditions to enter the global market.
A single rough diamond may change hands 20–30 times before reaching a jewelry store. With such a complex journey, absolute certainty about a mined diamond’s ethical status is extremely challenging.
